Plastic flow in solids with interfaces

چکیده
A non-equilibrium theory of isothermal and diffusionless evolution of incoherent interfaces within a plastically deforming solid is developed. The irreversible dynamics of the interface are driven by its normal motion, incoherency (slip and misorientation), and an intrinsic plastic flow; and purely by plastic deformation in the bulk away from the interface. Using the continuum theory for defect distribution (in bulk and over the interface) we formulate a general kinematical framework, derive relevant balance laws and jump conditions, and prescribe a thermodynamically consistent constitutive/kinetic structure for interface evolution. keywords: Continuous distribution of dislocations, Finite strain elasto-plasticity, Incoherent interfaces, Interface evolution.

Plasticity in multi-phase solids with incoherent interfaces and junctions
Boundaries and junctions (both internal and external) can contribute significantly to the plastic deformation of metallic solids, especially when the average size of the grains (phases) is less than hundred nanometres or when the size of the solid itself is of the order of microns. The overall permanent deformation of the solid is a result of a coupling between bulk plasticity with moving inter...
متن کاملThe effects of rate sensitivity and plastic potential surface curvature on plastic flow localization in porous solids
Plastic flow localization in porous elastic-viscoplastic solids is analyzed with an emphasis on the effects of material rate sensitivity and plastic potential surface curvature. The effect of rate sensitivity is included in a material model that accounts for a change of yield surface curvature in a rate-insensitive porous ductile solid. Shear band formation under plane strain and axisymmetric t...
متن کاملMicromechanics of emergent patterns in plastic flows
Crystalline solids undergo plastic deformation and subsequently flow when subjected to stresses beyond their elastic limit. In nature most crystalline solids exist in polycrystalline form. Simulating plastic flows in polycrystalline solids has wide ranging applications, from material processing to understanding intermittency of earthquake dynamics. Using phase field crystal (PFC) model we show ...
متن کاملFinite element analysis of elastic-plastic solids under Vickers indentation: surface deformation
Finite element modeling has been used to study the development of surface deformation during indentation with a Vickers indenter. A wide range of materials with different elastic modulus and yield stresses are examined. Results show that in a pyramidal indentation process, for a perfectly plastic material, sinking-in during loading can change to pile-up in unloading. This phenomenon depends on ...
